It is been a long standing trend that processor architectures are moving towards heterogeneous cores. Here is a recent article that underlines the many reasons for that trend and the major problem with it: Everyone is still looking for the magic compiler! The Computer Architecture Panel at the ACM Turing Award Webcast is very much worth watching. Wires are becoming (again) the limiting factor which is also the emphasis of How data moves is key.
